General information about standard aluminium sheets

Whether in the construction industry or the food industry - standard aluminium sheets are used in a wide variety of applications. Because: The material properties make these sheets universally usable.

With a density of 2.70 kg/cm³, aluminium is one of the light metals. Despite their low weight, aluminium sheets are very strong and corrosion-resistant. The oxide layer surrounding the material, protects aluminium from environmental influences such as water and steam. Aluminium sheets are therefore often used in humid environments.

Standard aluminium sheets can also be easily deformed. This leads to cost savings in the further processing of the semi-finished products. Aluminium is also convincing from the point of view of sustainability: its low weight reduces emissions during transport, and at the end of its service life aluminium sheets can be 100 percent recycled.

How are standard aluminium sheets produced?

Aluminium sheets are mainly produced by rolling. In this process, an aluminium ingot is passed through rolling stands in several passes, with the distance between the rolls becoming ever smaller. This distance determines the thickness of the sheet.

If aluminium sheets with a thickness of a few millimetres are to be produced, hot rolling is often enough. The aluminium ingot is heated to a temperature of 500 to 600°C for this purpose. The material becomes easily deformable, so that relatively little force is required.

If standard aluminium sheets are to be particularly thin, cold rolling follows. This takes place at room temperature and additionally increases the material strength.

During production, standard aluminium sheets can be provided with a pattern. Forming rolls press the pattern into the material. This results in teardrop or corrugated sheets, for example.

After the rolling process, standard aluminium sheets can undergo additional surface treatments. In this way, sheets can be dyed or hardened.
