Painted Sheets
General information about painted sheets
The colouring of aluminium represents a refinement of the surface. The paint layer can protect the material from rust and environmental influences or serve as electrical insulation. The colour is often desired for optical reasons.
Frequently used processes for the colouring of aluminium sheets are stove enamelling and powder coating. In baking varnishing, liquid varnish is applied and baked at 130 °C. The varnish is then applied to the aluminium sheet. It is applied with spray guns. Dry paint powder is used for powder coating.
Colour-coated aluminium sheets can be used in many ways, for example for signs, household appliances and machine claddings. They are also popular as design elements.
How are painted sheets produced?
Powder coating begins with the cleaning of the aluminium. In order to create the basis for an optically perfect and durable paint layer, degreasers and light etching agents are used. Binders are also applied to ensure the adhesion of the paint.
The sheet metal to be coloured is then fed into the spray booth, where the paint powder is sprayed on. The powder stream is electrically charged so that the particles are evenly distributed on the surface.
The paint powder usually consists of epoxy, polyester, nylon, PVC, polyurethane or acrylic.
The aluminium sheets are baked in a hardening furnace. There the colour particles melt together. In general, a temperature between 170 and 200°C is required. Baking creates a uniform, even and resistant surface. After cooling down, the coating is immediately fully loadable.
Excess powder can be recovered during the process. Powder coating is therefore considered to be resource-saving and environmentally friendly. The process produces the same quality as liquid painting but is often more economical.
