General information about profiles

In the Kloeckner online shop you can find universal beams and columns, angles, channels, flats, rounds, squares and tee sections under the rubric steel sections.

The various sections are named according to their relative cross section (which stretches over the length of the product) e.g. round-, square-, U- or T-profile. Steel sections come in range of different shapes and sizes, they are very versatile in application and hence used in a variety of industries.

Like most Kloeckner products steel sections can be manufactured to suit different applications. Treatments to increase material strength or coatings to improve corrosion and weather resistance can be applied. Depending on the particular surface treatment applied the aesthetic of a product can be manipulated to make it more appealing.

How are steel sections manufactured?

Depending on the particular section manufactured, a hot-rolling, cold-rolling or cold drawing process can be applied. The manufacturing process is commonly chosen according to the material used as well as the desired form and purpose of the end product.

Hot-rolling
Hot-rolling is primarily used in the manufacture of standardised steel sections. During the hot-rolling process blocks of raw steel are heated in multiple cycles. Once rolling temperature is reached, the material can easily be manipulated and used to manufacture various sections such as beams, columns and alike.

Cold-rolling
After hot-rolling, steel sections may additionally be cold-rolled to induce particular desirable characteristics. Cold-rolling steel at room temperature furthermore allows for greater accuracy in measurements.

Cold drawing
Primary material used in cold drawing has commonly already been given a contour in preceding rolling processes. The primary section is fed into a drawing machine, which pulls material through a comparably smaller die at room temperature. Cold drawing generates high-quality smooth sections with only minor deviations in measurements. Products that have been created using cold drawing techniques also benefit from increased strength and stability.

Which industries utilise Steel Sections in their manufacture?

Steel sections are purchased and utilised in a multitude of industries ranging from green (agricultural equipment) to yellow (construction) and white goods. Particularly interesting are role of sections in sectors such as infrastructure and street furniture, trucks and trailer manufacture as well as in lifting and excavating.

What are the benefits of steel sections?

Steel sections are a staple good in most manufacturing and constructive businesses. They are commonly cherished for their versatility as well as their:

  • Strength
  • Lightness
  • High carrying capacity
  • Opportunities to simplify processing
  • Maximised yield
  • Easy connection to other materials
  • Cost effectiveness
