Anodised Sheets
General information about anodised sheets
The process "anodising" describes the electrolytic oxidation of aluminium (ELOXAL). Requirements for anodising are defined in DIN 17611.
During anodising, an oxide layer is formed on the surface of the material which protects it from corrosion and makes it extremely resistant to scratches, sunlight, moisture and chemical substances. Anodised sheets are therefore very easy to clean and resistant. The reduction of material wear is advantageous from a sustainability and cost point of view. Anodised sheets have all the advantages of aluminium: They are convincing due to their high strength and low weight and can be easily further processed.
Due to their resistance, anodised sheets are often used in household appliances and claddings, but also in the construction industry. The thickness of anodised layers is usually between 2 and 20 micrometers. Thicker anodising layers are mainly used in the construction and automotive industries.
The anodised layer gives aluminium sheets a high-quality and decorative surface. The sheet can be coloured during the process.
How are anodised sheets produced?
In preparation, the aluminium part is first cleaned of dirt and the natural oxide layer. Cleaning and pickling agents are used for this purpose.
Anodising begins after pre-treatment. Under natural conditions, aluminium forms a very thin oxide layer on the surface by reacting with the oxygen in the air. This effect is technically enhanced by immersing the aluminium sheet in an anodising bath and electrifying it. Direct current and a bath of sulphuric acid or oxalic acid electrolytes are usually used for the electrolytic process. The aluminium is switched as an anode. Other processes use alternating current.
The surface of freshly treated aluminium sheets is often porous. In this state, the sheets can be optimally colored.
The material surface is then compacted. This is usually done with hot water or steam.
